VILLA keeper Jed Steer says he is rising to the challenge of being the club’s No1 choice in goal at the moment,
Four wins in a row have put Villa back into the play-off race, but they have only conceded once in that time.
And Steer has been rewarded for his efforts with a new one-year contract.
The former Norwich keeper was out on loan at Charlton before being recalled due to an injury to Orjan Nyland.
Even then, he had to get past Croatia keeper Lovre Kalinic.
But another injury setback allowed him to do that – and now he wants to keep his place.
Steer, 26, told the club’s official website: “I remember saying I was up for a challenge when I came back, I’ve played the last few games and I want to keep playing, then let’s see where that takes us.
“With the wins we’ve had this last few weeks, confidence is sky high, we fancy outlives to beat anyone in this division
“We’re confident but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
Villa’s defence has been their Achilles heel this season, but Steer says John Terry has worked wonders in training.
The addition of Tyrone Mings, on loan from Bournemouth, is another factor.
But Steer is the latest Villa player to praise ex-England and Chelsea skipper Terry,
He added: “We’ve worked really hard with JT and had some good sessions, it’s a bit more organised and it’s vocal as well.
“We’ve been squeezing the space, even if it’s only a couple of yards.
“We want as many clean sheets as we can.
“But our attacking talent is frightening as well, every day in training I see the fire power we have.
“We fancy ourselves to score against every team
“”We’re pushing to where we want to be.
“The gaffer’s very upbeat, whether you win or lose it’s the same, not too high or low.
“When it comes down to it, training’s tough and it’s a good place to be.”
Steer is now looking forward to trying to keep Villa’s momentum going against Blackburn when the Championship programme resumes.
He added: “We have bits we still want to iron it, a few of the boys will be away with their International teams, but we want to look at the rest of the season and smash that.”
