Villa player ‘abuse’ for £5m deal

By Graham Hill

FRENCH defender Frederic Guilbert admits he has had ‘abusive’ criticism since signing for Villa.

The £5million full-back joined at the end of the January transfer window and was immediately loaned back to Ligue 1 club Caen.

But Guilbert wanted to help his club in their relegation battle. However, he has been slammed in France for signing for Dean Smith’s side.

It has been suggested he is not giving his all for Caen and has one eye on joining Villa this summer.

Guilbert, 24, told the France Bleu site: “Now some criticisms are sometimes abusive.

“After signing for Aston Villa, I can understand, and many people say that ‘he has his mind elsewhere’.

“I knew that these things were going to be said when I signed for Aston Villa.

“I am concerned by the club at more than 1000 per cent. My head is not at Aston Villa.

“I’m concentrating on Caen because I really want to save them, and help the club stay in Ligue 1.

“This is the club in my area. I was trained here. It’s important for me to see them in Ligue 1 and not in Ligue 2,” he added.
