Why McGinn could miss Play-offs

By Graham Hill

JOHN MCGINN may be in the form of his life for Aston Villa – but his entire season could crash around him in the space of a few games.

The Scotland midfielder is on 13 bookings after collecting a yellow card against Bristol City on Saturday.

And the Daily Star says two more before the end of the regular Championship season would result in a three-match ban.

That could technically rule him out of all of Villa’s play-off games if they get there,

McGinn is no stranger to bookings, he picked up 18 last season at Hibernian.

But Villa will definitely not want to be without him if they have a chance to return to the Premier League.

Wins over Bolton and Millwall over Easter – which would complete a record busting TEN successive victories – could make the picture clearer.

Another six points ahead of games against Leeds and Norwich could seal Villa’s play-off ambitions.

And in that case, boss Dean Smith is sure to be tempted by the possibility of resting McGinn for the remaining two matches as he will not carry his yellow cards into the play-offs.

McGinn served a two-match ban for reaching 10 bookings – and the start of Villa’s incredible run began without him when they won in a Jack Grealish inspired 4-0 win over Derby.

But McGinn returned to prove just as key as the Villa skipper in an amazing run which has put Smith’s men right back in the promotion frame.

It is another hurdle for Villa to negotiate – and it is doubtful McGinn will give anything less than 100 per cent meaning a caution is always possible.
