‘Mings at left-back? Forget it!’

By Graham Hill

DEAN Smith reckons Tyrone Mings could not have adapted to his role at Villa any better.

Mings arrived at Villa Park on loan from Bournemouth just as the January transfer window was about to close.

And while the defender is no stranger to the Championship from his time at Ipswich, Smith says he has still had to get used to those extra midweek fixtures.

Smith told reporters: “We haven’t had to manage him differently. I

“I suppose he probably enjoyed his second day recovery a bit more at Bournemouth than he does here.

“He gets less of a second day recovery.

“But he’s got used to it, he’s had no problems.

“The only time he’s had to come off in a game was when he got sent off at Rotherham.”

But Smith admitted that some expected Mings to be playing a slightly different role under Smith.

The Villa boss always had him down as a centre-half though and Villa fans would now not expect to see him play anywhere else.

Smith added: “He’s handled it really well. A few people thought I would play him at left-back, but I see him as a centre-back and that’s where he sees himself as well.”
