EX-VILLA striker Garry Thompson says Tammy Abraham needs to get the better of a Chelsea team-mate if he is to emerge as a Wembley hero.
Abraham will go up against fellow Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori at Wembley in the Championship Play-off Final against Derby County.
And it will be a duel between two players who have had impressive seasons away from Stanford Bridge.
Abraham has netted 26 times for Villa to finish up as top scorer with the goals that have helped Dean Smith’s side to the final.
Tomori has been a rock at the back for the Rams and won the club’s player of the year award.
But Thompson told the Express & Star that Abraham needs to make an improvement on his displays in the Play-offs so far.
Abraham missed the end of the regular Champiomship season with a shoulder injury and there were signs in the semi-final against West Brom that it was continuing to give him problems.
Thompson said: “Abraham will be right up for this one, as any player should be.
“If you were being honest you would have to say he was not quite at his best in either leg of the semi-final, even though he scored in the first.
“But he always shows courage and rarely shies away, even when things aren’t going his way.
“Villa need him to be back up to the levels he has shown for most of the season at Wembley.
“He’s scored in both games against Derby and the fact he will be facing a Chelsea team-make, Fikayo Tomori, should only encourage him further.”
