VILLA Chief Executive Christian Purslow says John McGinn is a ‘model signing’ for the club.
Purslow hinted that the majority of Villa’s work in the transfer market this summer would be of the young and hungry variety.
McGinn is now recognised as one of the best bargain buys ever made by Villa.
He cost just £2.7million from Hibernian last summer when Steve Bruce was in charge.
And Purslow says he will be encouraging those sort of deals despite the financial backing of wealthy owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.
Purslow told the BBC: “John McGinn, that is a model signing for Aston Villa – age, hunger ands the most important word out the lot, which is quality.
“He is an incredibly influential figure around he team because he exudes positivity, loves playing for our football club – so that rubs off on other players.
“If we can find players of that ilk: age, profile, quality, character – that’s the perfect Aston Villa signing.
“We said it recently, we thank Steve Bruce for that because he absolutely left us an absolute gem in that footballer.”
McGinn told reporters he hopes the core of this squad will stay together in the top flight.
The Scotland midfielder said: McGinn said: “Hopefully we can keep the squad together. I know they’re going to have to make a few additions but hopefully we keep the main players together and give it a good go next year.
“I just hope they don’t change it too much and stick with the group we have got now.”
McGinn also said his move to Villa was a risk worth taking.
He added: He explained: “Sometimes in football you have to take risks and challenge yourself. I think sometimes people had the perception of me as just a runner and a hard-working player.
“I think I am that. But I also think I have a lot more to my game. I think it helped coming down here and challenging myself against younger, faster, stronger players. I have shown I have a lot more to offer.
“There are always going to be doubters and people who question whether you can make it at a certain level. Hopefully in the Premier League next year I will show what I can do.”
