STEVEN Gerrard says that Villa target James Tavernier has what it takes to be one of the Premier League’s top full-backs.
Villa have been strongly linked with summer move for the Glasgow Rangers captain.
Boss Dean Smith is staging a major rebuild after winning promotion to the Premier League.
And he is seemingly making full-backs one of his priorities at the moment.
Villa are believed to be one of the frontrunners to sign England Under-20 defender James Justin from Luton Town.
And Tavernier, 27, – who started his career a decade ago at Newcastle United – is also said to be on his wish-list.
Ibrox boss Gerrard rates Tavernier and does not want to lose him.
But he admits that if a big money offer comes in, then it could be difficult to say no.
Gerrard told reporters in Scotland: “Tav could potentially get to the level of the top full-backs in England.
“If you analyse it, he’s got the body to do it. He’s robust enough to do it and he’s got the technical ability to do it.
“His quality from the side, in terms of crossing and assists, it doesn’t matter what league you play in.
“He’s improved defensively but can still get better. It’s no surprise that he’s been on the agenda for most of this season.
“There’ve been calls about Tav with clubs interested. I am sure there still is.
“The reality is, and I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but every player has his price.”
