ASTON Villa are reported to be interested in free agent Todd Kane – who is about to be released by Chelsea.
The Football Insider site says defender Kane, 25, will leave Stamford Bridge this summer Stamford Bridge this summer after Chelsea missed the deadline to trigger an extension in his contract.
Kane has been on loan at Hull City and the report says it is understood that Villa are interested in the former England youth international because he can play at both full-back positions and on either wing.
The link is a surprising one with boss Dean Smith spending money to rebuild the squad.
And Villa have already been linked with a move for seasoned defender Gary Cahill – a former Villa centre half – who is believed to be on Smith’s radar.
Kane would fit into the age bracket Villa are looking at when it comes to new signings.
But the player is likely to be well known to Villa coach John Terry. Kane has been at Chelsea since he was a trainee but he has never made a senior appearance for them and has been loaned out nine times.
Last season, he played 41 games for Hull and scored three times. Perhaps if Villa had stayed in the Championship, this move might have been more realistic but Smith seems to be aiming higher now.
