Villa ready to push to the Max?

By Graham Hill

VILLA’S reported interest in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez is gathering pace.

But they would have to pay £35million for the Uruguayan.

That has not stopped the player’s Wikipedia page being edited by at least one Villa fan though as it now reads: ‘He is currently en route to Villa Park to sign for the greatest club the world has ever seen. UTV’!

The latest link comes from the head of Defensor Sporting Club in Uruguay, Ney Castillo.

He told radio show Tiempo de Futbol on Sport 890 that Villa want to sign Gomez, 22.

That show went out on June 6 and Castillo said: “I have been called from Spain by Maxi Gómez, there is interest from Valencia and Aston Villa.”

Gomez used to play for Defensor and clearly still has contacts there.

And Spanish newspaper Marca has also quoted Villa scout Juanfran on how much he admires Gomez.

The player has power and a clinical finish, and it has been suggested that dealing with the physicality of the Premier League would not be a problem to him.

Gomez signed for Celta two years ago and agreed a five year deal.

So far, Villa have been focusing on players who have already been involved in the English game. Jota has spent time with Brentford and Blues, Kortney Hause was with Wolves and has already played for Villa on loan.

And Tyrone Mings could prove to be one of the signings of the year if they can get a possible £15million deal over the line.

But with a Spanish technical director and a strong European scouting network, it may not be long before we see Villa bringing in talent from abroad.
