VILLA have reportedly agreed a £22million deal for Brazilian Club Brugge striker Wesley Moraes, 22 – in a move that will set a new transfer record for the club.
News of the signing comes from the hln site and has been Tweeted by Belgian journalist Kriftof Terruer who posted: “Seven years ago Aston Villa signed a strong, tall, promising 21-year old striker from the Jupiler Pro League.
“Now they have signed a strong, tall, promising 22-year old striker from the same league: Brazilian Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge for £22m.”
The deal breaks the previous record set eight years ago when Darren Bent moved to Villa Park from Sunderland for an initial £18million – with add-ons, the transfer ended up totalling around £19million.
It looks as though Villa have made a move to strengthen their forward line now Tammy Abraham has returned to Chelsea.
The player is generally known by his first name only and he has scored 32 goals in 107 appearances for Brugge. But he scored or made 27 in 48 games last season which brought him to the attention of Premier League clubs.
Wesley began his career with Slovakian side AS Trenčín, and then moved to Brugge three years ago.
This is Villa’s biggest spend of the transfer window so far and came out of the blue as the player had been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United.
Newcastle are thought to have pulled out of the running to sign Wesley who is believed to have agreed a five-year deal with Villa, who have yet to confirm the deal.
