VILLA club captain James Chester is a reported target for Leeds United as they look to replace Pontus Jansson.
The Wales defender is on Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa’s wish list this summer according to the Daily Star – and a £7.5million offer could be on its way.
The injury-hit Chester has not played a senior game for Villa since January but was part of the Villa squad that travelled to the USA for their pre-season training camp.
But boss Dean Smith now has Dean Smith hasTyrone Mings, Kortney Hause, Bjorn Engels and Ezri Konsa competing for places in defence at Villa Park.
Chester will also have to manage a knee injury picked up on international duty last year.
But the player says he is recovering well, despite being out of action for six months.
Chester said: “With the rest I’ve had since the end of January, the injury has improved an awful lot.
“I’m not dealing with any pain at the moment. That’s a huge bonus but with the type of injury it is it will need monitoring and perhaps I won’t train as much as I always have done, to prolong my career.”
Jansson was sold to Brentford after allegedly falling out with Bielsa over last season’s controversial incident against Villa.
Bielsa ordered his players to allow Villa to score an equaliser after Leeds had scored when Smith’s team thought Leeds were putting the ball out of play for an injury.
Albert Adomah was allowed to walk the ball into the net but a clearly angry Jansson tried to take the ball off the Villa winger.
