SIR Alex Ferguson is reported to be urging Manchester United to sign Villa midfielder John McGinn – despite being in talks over a new contract.
Villa have made it known that they have put a £50million price tag on McGinn – who they signed for just £2.75million from Hibernian last year.
But, say The Sun, Fergie wants McGinn, 24, and believes he has a connection with the Scotland midfielder.
Ferguson is reported to be close friends with McGinn’s grandad Jack, who is as former Celtic chairman and Scottish FA president.
But with Villa already in a position to tell Tottenham skipper Jack Grealish is not for sale – they are likely to tell United the same.
Earlier this month, the Scottish Sun said that McGinn is set to be handed a bumper new deal by Villa after signing for four years when he came to the Midlands.
News of United’s interest could see Villa bringing those contract talks to a swift conclusion as they want McGinn – who scored twice in a 4-1 pre-season friendly at Charlton – as part of the core of their Premier League squad.
Dean Smith has been stocking up on midfielders this summer – but McGinn is one of his star men and a new deal could be agreed soon.
United have been linked with moves for Christian Eriksen, Ivan Rakitic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Sean Longstaff – but it seems Fergie prefers a deal for McGinn.
