Elmo-Bruce link is no surprise

By Phil Jennings

IT would be no surprise to see former Villa boss Steve Bruce make a move for Villa full-back Ahmed Elmohamady before Thursday’s deadline.

The Sun says that Bruce wants the Egypt skipper at Newcastle United this season.

Elmohamady is 31 now, but Bruce knows what the player can offer – and it would appear that he will not be a first choice player at Villa Park under Dean Smith.

Bruce had Elmohamady as part of his Hull City squad before taking him to Villa.

Another reunion would appear to be on the cards but it depends on whether Smith wants to let the player go.

On the face of it, Elmohamady does not fit the profile of Villa’s squad age-wise. But he played a major role in helping countryman Trezeguet leave Turkey for Villa.

But Smith is likely to offload players before Thursday’s window with strikers Scott Hogan and Jonathan Kodjia looking the most likely to be sold. And that could open up funds for a new striker.
